“LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
Psalm 8:9
As I have cited in a previous email, I am a chronically forgetful person. Despite my best efforts, I have lost many things in the abyss that is the Rector house and forgotten more events and tasks than I would care to admit. When turning to scripture, I find comfort in that I am not alone in this shortcoming. Scripture is replete with people who forget God’s character and His faithfulness to them. Apart from my forgetfulness in life’s simpler tasks, I too, can find myself like the Israelites. They saw tangible signs of the Lord working on their behalf, yet would forget or discount His ability to continue to provide for His people. In Exodus 16, the Lord (after splitting the sea for them a few chapters prior) offers food from heaven for His people. Moses instructs them to take enough for one day, yet we read 16:20 that some disobeyed and tried to hoard the manna anyway. Maybe they had not forgotten the actual Red Sea event, but they do seem to forget to connect this event to the Lord’s faithful character in their present circumstance. We do well to remind ourselves of His character continuously.
The last verse of Psalm 8 today is the same as the first verse. Remembering the majesty of the Lord are the bookends to this Psalm. His majesty is clearly something we need to keep at the forefront of our minds. When we remember His majesty, we are more grateful for His love for us. We are more willing to walk humbly. We are putting ourselves in a posture of praise.
User update:
In full transparency, our devotional time was marred by an epic showdown of who got the skinny green marker. It was one of those showdowns from which it is hard to bounce back. Sometimes I really like the coloring sheet in addition to our devotion and other times I am not so sure… Nonetheless, we tried. We discussed why scripture repeats itself sometimes and why we need to continually remind ourselves of how great God is. As we closed one child asked if God is “on the team of those who are gooder?” It was totally off base from our discussion and more than we could fully unpack that night, but it was a good reminder that their little brains are growing, thinking, and absorbing what we say and do.
Have a great week!
Anne
