“LORD our Lord how majestic is your name in all the Earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.”
Welcome to FortheFours! Rather than follow our typical email format today, I am posting the weekly devotional below. We are moving along in our study of the Psalms from Psalm 1 to Psalm 8. My NIV study Bible encapsulates this Psalm by saying it is a Psalm “in praise of its creator, out of wonder over his sovereign ordering of creation.” When we open our eyes to see it, we notice that the Earth is full of the glory of God, from the majesty of the skies to the minute details of our cells.
The second verse has had me pondering for the better part of this past week. Why does God use the praise of children and infants as a stronghold against His enemies? The more I contemplate it, the more amazed I am by it, but still somewhat puzzled. From various commentaries and readings, I have gathered that the Psalmist makes this claim to show the vast and brilliant design, in that God who created the skies also cares for the most vulnerable infants. Furthermore, I believe this verse is another reminder that God’s economy of wealth and strength is not our own. What is weak in the eyes of the world can be made strong in the hands of the Lord. If you have other interpretations, would love to hear in the ~comment section~ below.
As we did this devotional as a family, my daughter’s takeaway was, “God makes everything right.” Whether our favorite pink skies or stormy skies, Colossians 1:17 says that the Lord is before all things and in Him all things hold together.
May we live with the confidence that He is holding all things together!
