Perhaps you have said something you wish you had not said. I can think of many times when I have said something cutting to my husband on the phone (generally when he calls and says he is on his way home from work and I am at my wits end with the kids). We hang up, he comes in and greets the family. We act normally, but I know there is some reconciliation that needs to happen before the evening is over.
I imagine this is how Peter felt in our scripture today. Jesus had already appeared to the disciples in the locked room, now he has shown up on the beach. As we read last week, Peter hops out of his boat to go see him. After they have breakfast, Jesus and Peter finally have that conversation that has been needing to happen since Peter denied Jesus three times pre crucifixion. Then the author, John, casually mentions in vs. 20 that he has been lurking/ eavesdropping on this conversation. Peter asks about John, to which Jesus essentially says, don’t worry about him because your job is to follow me. This is convicting to me because, far too often, I am worried about what others are doing or what others have. But here, Jesus is clear that a life of obedience cannot be marred with constant comparison. He has extended grace and forgiveness to Peter and now Peter is called to follow Him.
Isaiah 30:21 “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying ‘this is the way; walk in it.”’
User Update:
We started by going around and talking about something we regret doing. I mentioned a car I wished I hadn’t bought. One child told me that their nursery was too small as a baby and they regretted not having more space…
So we pivoted from that and started to talk about Peter and Jesus’ conversation. We discussed how Peter had done something wrong and how Jesus forgives. Then we closed with our favorite type of prayer, a whisper prayer. We say “ready, set, go” then all whisper prayers up to God for 30 seconds and end with the Lord’s prayer. I am pretty sure two of the four just repeated the same word over and over as fast as they could, but I have to trust that the Lord hears our prayers of many words AND of one.
