It is Spring Break week here in Birmingham and oh we were ready for the break in the Rector house! We are grateful for the opportunities we have had to travel with our children, and the privilege to do so is not lost on us. Even so, someone commented to me that traveling with kids is not a vacation per say, rather it is parenting in another location. I resonate deeply with that sentiment. To be transparent, one of the biggest struggles I have when traveling in this season is my lack of patience (stemming from lack of personal space?) and my ability to be present in the moment. I have compiled a travel devotional below. It is pretty simple - it goes through the Lord’s prayer with questions and prayer topics. It could be done a little bit each night or knocked out on a long road trip home. Especially as rhythms are disrupted while traveling, my hope is this might be helpful to bring your family together and discuss the way you have seen God at work.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
-Thank God for his continual presence. Where have you felt his presence?
-What quality of God have you seen while traveling?
Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
-Ask that God would be glorified on your trip.
-How have you seen God working when you were traveling?
Give us this day our daily bread.
-Thank God that He gives us everything we need.
-What ways have you had to rely on God while traveling?
Forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
-Is there anything you need to ask God’s forgiveness for on this trip?
-Moment for silent confession
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever, Amen.
To Close: Thank you, Father, that the Earth is yours and everything in it. Thank you for a chance to see more of you and what you made. Amen
And let’s be real…Check back with me on my grateful heart and the Lord’s sanctifying work after 15 hours in the car and 1 hotel room…
